Learn both the “why” and “how” of interface animation! Experts Kristen O’Callaghan and Dave Ellington will instruct workshop attendees on when and how to use motion to enhance user experiences. Kristen and Dave will demonstrate the tools and techniques for incorporating animation into a typical product/UX design workflow (access and familiarity with the tools is not required — see below for more information).

The workshop will be divided into two parts:

  • Part I: We’ll discuss the theory behind animation’s role in UX, explore the benefits motion can provide, and how we can use motion to our advantage as designers when developing a user flow.
  • Part II: The workshop will do a quick refresher of the principles of animation and a discussion on the tools available for prototyping. This discussion will cover the use of prototyping tools such as Principle, Figma, Adobe XD and Adobe After Effects and their respective benefits and drawbacks. This segment will conclude with a demonstration of using After Effects (in conjunction with Bodymovin) to create and export a custom hover state animation for a button.

Kristen O’Callaghan

Kristen leads the product design team at Social Tables

Kristen leads the Product Design team at Social Tables, now part of Cvent. Her role spans strategy, research, UX, and visual design, and her work is particularly focused on collaboration with product management and engineering in order to create innovative, iterative, and practical design solutions.


Dave Ellington

Dave is an animator at Duke & Duck, a company he co-founded.

He | Him | His

Dave has been living in the DC area since 2009 which is around the time he helped start one of the areas most successful animation/motion graphics studios, Duke & Duck. He continues his work as a production animator working on client projects that range from some of DC’s largest nonprofits to commercial clients across the country.


Platform and Prerequisites

This event will be streamed via Zoom. In order to participate fully, attendees should plan to join on the Zoom app via their computer, tablet, or mobile device with enough bandwidth to support viewing video. In order to ensure only those who have registered for the event are able to attend — and to create space for intimate conversations — only those whose display name fully matches the name on our registration list will be admitted from the waiting room. There will be a demonstration component to this event that will showcase industry standard tools (Principle, Figma, Adobe XD and Adobe After Effects and their respective benefits and drawbacks). It is not necessary to have access to and familiarity with these tools.
